Is AI Search Worth It for Your Business? What New Traffic Data Says (and What to Do First)

Coding & Technology | Published 27 Oct 2026 | Last updated 27 Oct 2026

Is AI search worth it for your business? GA4 sessions for one D2C client over 28 days: Google organic 6.3K, AI assistants 377, about 6% of Google organic. What to do first: track AI referrers in GA4, then fix Google basics before AEO

Last updated: 27 October 2026

If you run a business in India, someone has probably tried to sell you a "GEO" or "AI search" package this year. In the same week of October 2026, three studies said AI assistants send very little traffic compared with Google. An agency founder answered that this is the wrong way to judge them. This post sets out what the data actually says, where it falls short, and what to do first.

The short answer

  • Does ChatGPT send traffic to websites? Yes, but very little compared with Google organic. In the studies below it is well under 1% to around 3% of Google's volume.
  • Is GEO worth it? As a separate traffic channel, the current numbers say no. As a way to be seen when buyers ask AI tools for advice, there is a serious case for it. It costs least when it is built on top of good Google SEO.
  • What to do first: measure. Set up GA4 key events and track AI visitors before you pay for any AI visibility tool.

What the new traffic studies found

Marie Haynes: 100 sites, 12 months of GA4 data

In "GEO is a distraction" (21 October 2026), Marie Haynes looked at 12 months of GA4 data from 100 websites of varying sizes, covering more than 145 million sessions.

  • Sessions from ChatGPT were just 0.62% of the sessions from Google organic. With all other AI assistants added, it was 0.73%.
  • Only 55 of the 100 sites were tracking conversions in GA4, so the conversion figures come from those 55 sites alone.
  • In those 55 sites, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8%, against 3.02% for Google organic visitors.
  • Even so, Google drove 96.5% of conversions across the channels she analysed, and 27 times more conversions than all AI assistants combined.
  • She found that ChatGPT's referral growth stopped around August 2025, and that it has sent fewer visitors since.

She calls her dataset small, and it is not India-specific. One more finding matters for Indian SMEs: 45 of the 100 sites were not tracking any key events at all.

SEO Works: organic delivered 39 times the traffic

As reported by Search Engine Roundtable (22 October 2026), a benchmark from the UK agency SEO Works found organic search delivered 39 times more traffic than AI assistants. For every 100 conversions from organic search, AI referrals delivered 3.2. AI referral traffic converted worse than paid search (0.67x) and better than direct traffic (2.48x).

Kevin Indig: is AI traffic hiding in "Direct"?

Many people believe AI visits show up in analytics as "Direct" traffic. Kevin Indig tested this on the GA4 data of 12 sites, a small sample that skews B2B, and all but two of the sites target the US.

  • Much of the growth in Direct traffic turned out to be bots. On one site, GA4 recorded 409,000 Direct sessions, and only 198 of them were engaged.
  • He could not detect hidden AI traffic in Direct without self-reported attribution, meaning asking customers how they found you.
  • Across 632 tests on four brands, he could not establish a reliable link between AI visibility and later branded search or Direct traffic. He adds that an effect could still exist; he just couldn't isolate it.

Meanwhile, Google itself has become AI search

A Semrush study reported by Search Engine Land (22 October 2026) found Google AI Overviews appeared on 88% of tracked commercial keywords in August 2026, up from 45.75% in September 2025. "Best X for Y" searches reached 96.12%. The sample was 400 US desktop keywords in banking, ecommerce and software, and the study didn't measure clicks or conversions. It is not Indian data, but the direction is clear. When buyers compare products or read reviews, an AI answer is increasingly the first thing they see on Google.

The counterpoint: AI search as a brand channel

Mike King of the agency iPullRank accepts the numbers but disputes the conclusion (22 October 2026). His argument is that the studies judge a brand channel with a traffic ruler:

  • People use ChatGPT as a conversation, so they often get their answer without clicking anywhere. Few referrals is expected, not proof the channel is useless.
  • GA4 undercounts AI. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer, and clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Google organic.
  • Being named in an AI answer works more like PR or advertising: it shapes which brands people shortlist, even when no one clicks.

He also agrees with part of the other side. He calls tactical GEO "hacks" a distraction too, and says Google is still the surface sending the most visitors. Several figures he quotes come from vendor-funded, self-reported US surveys, and he says so himself.

Balanced verdict: AEO vs SEO for a small business in India

Both sides agree on more than the headlines suggest:

  • Google is still where most visitors and enquiries come from. Its AI Overviews now pull from the same pages that rank well, so good SEO is the foundation for AEO.
  • AI assistants send few visitors, and in Haynes' sample those visitors converted well. They are worth tracking, not worth chasing at the expense of Google.
  • Being mentioned in AI answers may matter more than the clicks show, but no one has yet proved the size of that effect.
  • None of these samples is Indian. They are small, or US- or UK-focused. Your own GA4 data is the only reliable guide for your business.

If you're new to the terms, our guides to answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) in India explain them.

Update, 23 October 2026: one ChatGPT check isn't enough

Many business owners ask ChatGPT once whether it recommends them and take the answer as final. A study reported by Search Engine Land (22 October 2026) shows why that doesn't work. It comes from Envoyra, a vendor that sells AI visibility tracking, so it has an interest in the result.

  • Envoyra asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity 170 buyer-style questions each week for four weeks (13 September to 4 October), collecting 2,720 answers about software brands.
  • In 79% of question-and-assistant pairs (536 of 680), the recommended brands changed at least once over the four weeks.
  • The assistants disagreed on the top brand in 4 of 5 software categories. In CRM, for example, three assistants led with HubSpot and Gemini favoured Zoho CRM.
  • Limits: Envoyra didn't publish its questions, it tested API models that can differ from the consumer apps, and it covered software brands only, not Indian businesses.

How to check whether ChatGPT recommends your brand:

  1. Write a fixed list of 10–20 questions your buyers really ask, such as "best WhatsApp API provider in Chennai".
  2. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, not just one assistant.
  3. Repeat on the same day every month and record whether you're mentioned, where, and how you're described.
  4. Look at the trend over several months, not a single screenshot.
  5. Ask new customers how they found you. It is the only way to catch influence that GA4 can't see.

From our experience

At Vilva, we are now putting more effort into AEO and GEO. Repeated checks show that ChatGPT's recommendations of Vilva do vary from one check to the next, though they are good today. And we believe building websites for AI agents is the need of the hour.

Here is real GA4 data from a D2C client of ours, for the last 28 days (26 September to 23 October 2026). The client's site had 34K active users. Sessions by channel:

ChannelSessions
Paid Social27K
Direct8K
Organic Search6.3K
Organic Social5.4K
Cross-network1.3K
AI Assistant377
Referral193

AI assistants brought about 6% as many sessions as Google organic (377 vs 6.3K). They also brought 253 new users, against 3.9K from Organic Search. That is a higher share than the 0.73% in Haynes' 100-site sample, but it is one client over one month, so treat it as an example, not a benchmark. We don't have conversion data for this period, so we can't say how these visitors compare on sales.

What this means for Tamil Nadu and South Indian businesses

None of the traffic studies above include Indian sites, and we couldn't find any published split of AI search traffic by Indian state. The closest data is below. Where only India-wide figures exist, we say so.

  • Google's AI search now works in Tamil and every South Indian language. Google began rolling out AI Mode in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam (along with Bengali, Marathi and Urdu) from 8 October 2025, after launching it in English and Hindi (Google India blog, 8 Oct 2025). On 27 March 2026 Search Live, which lets people ask by voice and camera, was added in these languages too (Google India blog, 27 Mar 2026). A customer in Madurai or Kochi can now ask Google's AI a question in their own language.
  • South Indian languages stick. The IAMAI–Kantar Internet in India 2024 report found that 98% of Indian internet users accessed content in an Indic language, and that Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam had a "high conversion ratio": people who use these languages online tend to make them their main language online (IAMAI–Kantar, Jan 2025). The same report put Kerala first among states for internet penetration, at 72%.
  • Voice and AI features are already mainstream. The 2025 edition counted 958 million active internet users in India, and 44% had used AI-enabled features such as voice search, image search or chatbots (NDTV on IAMAI–Kantar 2025). This is an India-wide figure; the report coverage we found gives no Tamil Nadu split.
  • India is ChatGPT's second-largest market, and the South leads on advanced use. OpenAI says India is its second-largest market, with weekly users up fourfold in a year (Mint, Aug 2025). OpenAI's own "How India Uses ChatGPT" report ranks Telangana first, Karnataka second and Tamil Nadu third for use of its coding tools among paying users (OpenAI Signals, Feb 2026). That measures coding use only, not overall usage or search, and OpenAI publishes no state-wise user counts.
  • Tamil Nadu has a very large base of small businesses competing for the same answers. The state had 33,62,057 Udyam-registered MSMEs as of 31 March 2025, 98% of them micro enterprises (Tamil Nadu MSME Department policy note 2025–26).

The practical takeaway: if your customers are in Tamil Nadu or elsewhere in the South, don't wait for state-level AI traffic data. Add clear FAQ answers in Tamil (or Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam) as well as English, keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, and make WhatsApp enquiry easy to find on every page. Then watch your own GA4 numbers, as in the plan below.

What to do first: a 5-step plan

  1. Set GA4 key events. Mark the actions that mean business: purchases, form fills, calls, WhatsApp clicks and demo bookings. Without them, you can't tell which channel brings customers.
  2. Add an AI-referrer channel group. GA4 has no AI channel by default. Create a custom channel group that matches sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Our guide on tracking AI visitors in GA4 walks through it.
  3. Compare Google organic vs AI every month. Put sessions and key events side by side in one monthly report, together with your AI-recommendation checks and what new customers tell you.
  4. Fix Google basics first. Make sure your site is fast, crawlable and indexed, with clear service pages and an up-to-date Google Business Profile. This feeds both Google rankings and Google's AI Overviews.
  5. Then strengthen the content AI answers cite. Answer real buyer questions directly, keep prices, services and contact details clear and consistent, add FAQs, and earn mentions on trusted sites.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO worth it for a small business?

As a stand-alone traffic channel, current studies say no: AI assistants sent a small fraction of Google's traffic. As part of good SEO, it is worth doing, because the same work helps you appear in Google's AI Overviews and in assistants like ChatGPT.

Does ChatGPT send traffic to websites?

Yes, but not much. In Marie Haynes' study of 100 sites, ChatGPT sent 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic. For one of our D2C clients, all AI assistants together brought about 6% as many sessions as Google organic over 28 days.

Do visitors from ChatGPT convert better?

In Haynes' study, among the 55 sites that tracked conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% against 3.02% for Google organic. Google still drove 96.5% of conversions because it sent far more visitors.

AEO vs SEO: which should a small business in India focus on?

Start with SEO and treat AEO as the next layer on the same pages. Google is still the main source of visitors, and its AI answers draw on pages that are well optimised. These studies weren't based on Indian sites, so check your own GA4 data.

Why does my GA4 show so little AI traffic?

Partly because AI assistants send few clicks, and partly because GA4 has no AI channel by default. Some AI visits also arrive without a referrer, and clicks from Google's AI Overviews are counted as Google organic.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?

Use a fixed set of buyer questions, run them in several assistants every month, and track the trend. A vendor study by Envoyra found recommendations changed at least once in 79% of question-and-assistant pairs over four weeks, so one check is not reliable.

Does Google AI search work in Tamil and other South Indian languages?

Yes. Google started rolling out AI Mode in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam from 8 October 2025, and added Search Live (voice and camera) in these languages on 27 March 2026. To be cited, publish clear answers in the language your customers search in, not only in English.
