Your SEO report says rankings crashed. Here's how to check if it's real (October 2026)

Business | Published 30 Oct 2026 | Last updated 30 Oct 2026

Checklist for a sudden ranking drop in an SEO report: first compare Search Console clicks and impressions, then wait three days and re-check, spot-check the search yourself in a private window from the right city, and confirm with enquiries and any Search Console data lag

Last updated: 28 Oct 2026. Based on sources read between 13 and 28 Oct 2026. We'll update this post when rank-tracking data settles down or Google comments.

Short answer: Probably not, if the drop only shows up in a rank tracker. Since mid-September, many third-party trackers have been receiving Google results that real searchers don't see, and most of those "drops" reverse within days. Before reacting, compare with Search Console clicks and impressions, wait three days, spot-check from the right city and look at your enquiries.

If your monthly SEO report landed this week with a red arrow next to your main keywords, you're not alone. Rank-tracking tools have had a rough few weeks, and some of what they're reporting isn't what your customers see when they search on Google. Here's what's going on, how to tell a real drop from a data problem, and what a good report should lead with.

What's going on with rank trackers this month?

Rank trackers work by running searches on Google automatically and recording where your site appears. Since September, Google has been making that much harder, and some trackers have been getting wrong results back without realising it.

  • Nozzle's research (10 Oct 2026): the rank-tracking company Nozzle studied 27.5 million search results pages collected for its customers. It found that since 13 September, 8.0% of the Google results pages it received were "poisoned", meaning complete, normal-looking pages where most of the keyword's usual sites had been swapped out, against 0.17% before. In India the figure was 10.9%. On those pages, a tracked site fell out of the top 10 58.6% of the time, against 2.7% normally, and 77.9% were back to normal within three days (Nozzle).
  • Whose interpretation is it? Nozzle reads this as Google's response to AI tools scraping its results, with rank trackers caught in the crossfire. That's Nozzle's interpretation. Google hasn't confirmed it.
  • Other tools have noticed too. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 12 Oct that many third-party tools are still struggling. SE Ranking said it was "missing positions for some keywords", and Sistrix, DataForSEO, Advanced Web Rankings and Morningscore posted notices about problems (Search Engine Roundtable).
  • Real searchers didn't see the changes. According to SEOmonitor, from 26 September rank trackers across the industry recorded sudden ranking changes that people searching Google didn't see (Search Engine Journal, 10 Oct).

By late October, the big tools confirmed it. On 27 October, Semrush confirmed that Google is returning inaccurate results to some automated rank trackers and called the problem industry-wide. Tool vendors call these "poisoned" results; that is their word, and Google hasn't confirmed it. Other figures reported the same week (Search Engine Land, 27 Oct):

  • Ahrefs (22 Oct update): 5% to 20% of search results affected, depending on the data provider.
  • SEOmonitor: about 8% of its daily results were inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Nozzle's larger study (56.1 million results pages across 53 countries, 20 Aug to 21 Oct): 67.9% of affected results went back to normal within three days.
  • These come from different samples and methods, so they can't be compared directly. Google has not commented.

This happened at the same time as a real Google change: the September 2026 spam update, which ran from 24 September to 8 October (Search Engine Journal). So some drops are real. Since then, rank-tracking tools have shown more big swings, on 16, 20–21, 24 and 27 October, but Google hasn't confirmed any of them (Search Engine Roundtable, 27 Oct). The September spam update is still the last confirmed one. The checks below help you tell which drops are real.

How can I tell if my ranking drop is real? Five checks

1. Compare with Search Console clicks and impressions

Google Search Console shows how your site actually performed in Google Search: impressions, clicks and average position, from Google's own data. Open Performance → Search results, set the date range to cover the "drop", and compare it with the weeks before. SEOmonitor's advice is that real update effects usually persist across consecutive days and show up in Search Console impressions and clicks (SEJ). Nozzle puts it more bluntly: if a site "disappears" and Search Console still shows impressions and clicks, nothing happened to the site.

Also look at which keywords moved. Wrong tracker data often shows up as sudden moves on searches that have nothing to do with your business. That is a warning sign about the data, not a real loss. Semrush gives the same advice: if you see unusual changes, especially on unrelated keywords, compare with Search Console.

2. Wait three days and check again

In Nozzle's data, 80% of affected results lasted for a single check and 77.9% were back within three days. A real ranking change stays. If the tracker shows a one-day dip that comes straight back, it's most likely noise. Nozzle's later, larger study (to 21 Oct) put the figure at 67.9% back within three days, so the rule of thumb still holds: don't rewrite pages in a panic.

3. Spot-check in a private window from the right city

Search for the keyword yourself in a private (incognito) browser window, on the device your customers use, from the city you serve. Results vary by location, so a search from Chennai won't match one from Coimbatore. This isn't precise, but it quickly shows whether your page has really vanished.

4. Look at leads and enquiries, not just positions

Rankings are a means to an end. Check your calls, WhatsApp enquiries, form fills and sales for the same period. If enquiries are steady, a sudden ranking "crash" is unlikely to be real. Our guide to measuring whether your digital marketing is working covers what to track.

5. If Search Console is lagging, note the date and pull the data again

Search Console can be late too. Over the weekend of 10–11 October, its Performance report was delayed by more than 64 hours, came down to 44 hours and was back to normal by 12 October. Google hadn't commented (Search Engine Roundtable, 11 Oct). If the latest days look empty, check the "Last updated" note in the report, write down the date and pull the numbers again a couple of days later. Add the same kind of note for any day your tracker swung, for example "24 and 27 Oct 2026: unconfirmed volatility", so nobody misreads the dip later.

And don't worry if the separate Page Indexing report looks stuck. Google's John Mueller said on Reddit that "indexing doesn't change quickly, and when it does, you see that reflected in the performance reports first", adding, "honestly, save your energy" (Search Engine Roundtable, 27 Oct).

Based on Nozzle's research (10 Oct 2026) and SEOmonitor's advice as reported by Search Engine Journal (10 Oct 2026). These are rules of thumb, not guarantees.

If the drop does look real, start with the basics: our guide to why a website isn't ranking on Google covers the common technical mistakes.

What should a good monthly SEO report lead with?

Positions are the easiest number to report and, this month, the least reliable. A useful report for a business owner should lead with:

  1. Search Console clicks and impressions, month on month and year on year, for the pages and searches that matter to your business.
  2. Leads and enquiries from search, such as calls, WhatsApp messages and form fills, ideally tied to the landing page.
  3. What changed and why: pages published or fixed, and any Google updates during the month, with dates.
  4. Rank positions last, as a secondary signal, with a note when tracker data is unreliable.

A small reporting tip: since 6 October, Search Console's Performance report can combine several countries or devices in one filter, so if you serve customers in more than one country you can see one combined figure (SEJ). And if you want to look beyond rankings altogether, our post on why Google rank 1 isn't the goal explains what to focus on instead. For how AI answers fit into the picture, see our AEO guide.

FAQ

Why does my rank tracker show a drop that Search Console doesn't?

Because rank trackers and Search Console get their data differently. Trackers run automated Google searches, and since September 2026 many have received results that real searchers don't see. Search Console uses Google's own data on how your site appeared and was clicked. If Search Console impressions and clicks are steady, the tracker's drop probably isn't real.

Is Google deliberately giving rank trackers wrong results?

Google hasn't said so. The rank-tracking company Nozzle found that since 13 September 2026, 8.0% of the Google results pages it collected had most of their usual sites swapped out, and it interprets this as Google's response to AI scraping. That is Nozzle's finding and interpretation, not something Google has confirmed. On 27 October 2026 Semrush also confirmed it is receiving inaccurate results and called it industry-wide, and some tool companies suggest it is linked to Google limiting automated data collection. Google has not commented.

How long do these false ranking drops last?

Usually only a few days. In Nozzle's first study (to 9 Oct), 80% of affected results lasted for a single check and 77.9% were back to normal within three days. Its larger study to 21 Oct found 67.9% back within three days. A real ranking change tends to persist across consecutive days and also shows up as a fall in Search Console impressions and clicks.

Was my drop caused by Google's September 2026 spam update?

It might be. The spam update ran from 24 September to 8 October 2026, so real changes did happen in that window. Compare Search Console impressions and clicks before, during and after those dates. If they fell and stayed down, the update is a possible cause. If they held steady, the tracker is the more likely problem.

Why is my Search Console data missing for the last few days?

Search Console's Performance report is normally updated within hours, but it is sometimes delayed. Over the weekend of 10–11 October 2026 it ran more than 64 hours late before returning to normal on 12 October. Note the date and pull the data again in a day or two.

Should I stop using rank trackers?

No, but treat them as a secondary signal for now. They are still useful for spotting trends across many keywords. Lead with Search Console clicks and impressions and your enquiries, and check any sudden drop against those before acting on it. Several trackers, including Semrush and Ahrefs, say they have added checks to filter out bad results.

Was there a Google update on 27 October 2026?

Not a confirmed one. Search Engine Roundtable reported a spike in ranking volatility and SEO chatter on 27 October, after earlier swings on 16, 20–21 and 24 October, but Google hasn't confirmed an update. The last confirmed one is the September 2026 spam update, which completed on 8 October 2026.
